APPEARS IN Grassroots

Grassroots Alert: Vol. 14, No. 44 11/2/2007

INDIANA COURT IGNORES

“PROTECTION OF LAWFUL COMMERCE IN ARMS ACT”

This week, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled that the city of Gary, Indiana could continue its frivolous, politically motivated lawsuit blaming gun manufacturers for the actions of local criminals.  The case, City of Gary v. Smith & Wesson, is one of several around the country where the wheels of justice are grinding slowly, as gun makers try to get the courts to enforce the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) of 2005, which requires courts to dismiss this type of case.

OUTRAGE OF THE WEEK!

We’re pleased to announce a new feature in the Friday Grassroots Alert—the “Outrage of the Week!”  Each week (or as often as we can), we will report on a true outrage that affects the pro-Second Amendment community.  In order for this section to succeed, however, we need your help!  While NRA-ILA staff will keep its eyes and ears open for outlandish statements and activities on which to report, we want you to do the same. If you see something that you feel would be a good candidate for the “Outrage of the Week!” section, please send it to:  [email protected]

17-Year-Old Future Olympian Disciplined For Shotgun Shells In Vehicle:  In yet another case of over reactive, one-size-fits-all, “zero-tolerance” enforcement, Arizona high school senior and shotgun-shooting Olympic hopeful Kim Peters was recently charged by local school officials with “possession of a dangerous instrument” and subsequently suspended, an October 29 azcentral.com article reports.

Jayne Lyn Stahl = Foot In Mouth--Part II:  Following up on last week’s story concerning the outrageously offensive comments made by Jayne Lyn Stahl, equating NRA and its members with a murderer (“Another Poster Child For The NRA,” http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=3271), comes Ms. Stahl’s latest screed.  She couldn’t just let sleeping dogs lie.

STATE ROUNDUP  (please click to see any updates on states not listed below.)

KENTUCKY, MISSISSIPPI, NEW JERSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, & VIRGINIA:  Tuesday, November 6, is Election Day!  Please be sure to go to the polls and protect our Second Amendment rights.  For candidate ratings and endorsements, please visit www.NRAPVF.org, or please call the NRA-ILA Grassroots Division at (800) 392-VOTE (8683).  Remember to “Vote Freedom First” on Tuesday, November 6!

ILLINOIS:  State Police Seeking to Institute FOID Card Limitations!  As we reported last week, the Illinois State Police has proposed enacting an age limit for an Illinois Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, apparently in response to an editorial by Daily Southtown columnist Howard Ludwig.  Ludwig created controversy where none existed when he wrote an article about obtaining a FOID card for his ten-month-old son.  Currently, Illinois law does not set an age requirement for issuance of a FOID card with a parent’s consent, but imposing one could have disastrous effects on Illinois’ rich hunting heritage as well as endangering the lives of children.  The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) will determine if this rule will be enacted, but you can submit comments in opposition to the proposal.  Please address your comments to: Mr. John M. Hosteny, Interim Chief Legal Counsel, Illinois State Police, 801 South 7th Street, Suite 1000-S, P.O. Box 19461, Springfield, IL 61794-9461.  In your comments, be sure to ask Mr. Hosteny to share your comments with the members of JCAR.  The deadline for comments is Monday, November 5.

VIRGINIA:  On Tuesday, November 6, Virginians will go to the polls to decide who will represent them and their interests in Richmond. With all 140 General Assembly seats on the ballot, the choices made next week will directly impact our Second Amendment rights. The question is, as before every election, will that impact be positive or negative?

Across the Commonwealth, gun ban advocates are pulling out all the stops, campaigning on misinformation, and distorting the records of those candidates who have protected the Second Amendment, the right to self-defense, and our proud hunting heritage.

However, you can help to turn back this assault on our freedoms by voting in support of NRA-PVF endorsed candidates on November 6. Also, between now and Election Day, many pro-Second Amendment candidates can use your help in ensuring that their message is heard in their district and that Virginia’s law-abiding gun owners, sportsmen and hunters make it to the polls on Tuesday, November 6.

For a listing of the 2007 Virginia General Election NRA-PVF candidate endorsements and ratings, please visit http://www.nrapvf.org/.  While on the site, you may also access candidate websites to find out more information regarding how you can help maintain a pro-Second Amendment majority in the General Assembly.
