Michigan: Senate Committee to Vote on Expanding Gun-Free Zones

Tomorrow, the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety will take up SB 857 and SB 858. These bills would dramatically expand “gun-free zones” in the state and drastically limit where those with a concealed pistol license can legally carry, almost eliminating a person’s ability to carry for self-defense. In the recent election anti-gun legislators lost majority control of the State House. They are determined now more than ever to push their agenda through before they leave office at the end of the year. Please use the take action button below and tell the committee members to oppose these bills.

SB 857 and 858 would expand "gun-free zones" in Michigan by prohibiting gun owners from carrying a firearm in the Michigan State Capitol Building, the Binsfeld Senate Office Building, and the Anderson House Office Building, with an exception for legislators. The Capitol Commission in recent years banned both open and concealed firearms carry in the areas listed above; this legislation would memorialize the restriction into state law.

SB 858 takes this expansion of gun free zones even further by eliminating several exemptions for those who are licensed to carry concealed.  The largest change would be banning carry in any location with a liquor license, which includes any business that not only serves liquor but offers it for sale. This sweeping expansion would prohibit carrying in many commonly frequented business establishments including gas stations, pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, big box retailers, and many other locations throughout the state. This expansion is not rooted in public safety, but in further eroding the rights of law-abiding Michiganders.
