A man was shot in Newport as he was robbing a pawn shop, police said.
The robbery was reported at the E-Z Cash Pawn on Monmouth and 8th streets in Newport Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the owner and the two men exchanged gunfire during the robbery and one of the two men was struck in the arm.
“Two males came into the store displayed a weapon. The store owner was armed (and) pulled out a weapon (and) shots were fired,” Newport police Officer Larry Long said.
Terri Wiseman works next door to the pawn shop and said she heard about eight to 10 shots.
“We had our doors open and we heard the noise and the first thought was firecrackers, so we ran out to see what it was,” Wiseman said.
The men left the shop in an SUV and police chased it to 8th and Maple streets, where it crashed into a home.
Both men got out of the vehicle and ran. Police captured one right away and found the other hiding in a dumpster nearby, police said.
The men, identified as Rodger Williams and Sashia Cunningham, were both arrested.
Police said Cunningham was shot in the arm.
