Robbery victim shot armed man at gated south Kansas City apartment complex

A man and woman took matters into their own hands when they say someone tried to rob them. Now, that suspect is dead. The shooting happened about 4:55 a.m. at the Timber Lakes Apartments in the 11200 block of Montgall Avenue. It was at the apartment where the couple says a man with a gun tried to force them inside their home. The boyfriend grabbed his own gun and fought back.  "My girlfriend and I put our groceries inside and I was going to walk her back to her car," Josh Habib said. Habib and his girlfriend were returning from Walmart after working the night shift at their job.  "This man came around and was holding a gun and was saying give me this, give me that and threatening us with a gun," he said. Habib says the man was dressed in all black. He gave the man everything inside his pockets.  "But we were backed up into our apartment. My door was open he was beckoning us to go into the apartment," Habib said. Frightened, Habib made the decision to grab what he knew could possibly save them -- his own weapon that was just inside the door.  "I walked out he was still holding the gun and I thought he was going to shoot me that minute, and I just took a couple shots and he ran off," he said. Unsure if he shot the gunman, Habib and his girlfriend went inside to hide and call police.  Police say they later found the man dead. "The last thing I wanted to do is use my firearm. That's the last thing I wanted to do. But am I glad I had it? Yes, I am because things could've gotten very ugly, very fast if I hadn't," he said.
