As we previously reported, Google recently released the Gun Geo Marker app which was misguidedly designed to encourage users to "geolocate dangerous guns and owners" in their communities. According to Google Play, "Geolocation means marking dangerous sites on the App's map so that you and others can be aware of the risks in your neighborhood." Essentially, this app lent itself to extreme abuses that included exploiting gun owners' privacy and undermining public safety. For these reasons, and the vocal outrage of opposition from responsible gun owners and Second Amendment supporters, Gun Geo Marker's intended function has been disabled. Yet, this app has not been removed completely and can still be downloaded in a stymied version.
However, residents of the Show Me State and gun owners across the United States owe their gratitude to a Missouri Senator who is taking a stand for responsible gun owners' right to privacy and advocating for the complete removal of this app. Missouri Sen. Brian Munzlinger (R-18) recently met with a representative from Google and asked that this app be removed in its entirety.
"Regardless of your position on gun rights or the Second Amendment, this app is a classic example of how our privacy rights are eroding," said Sen. Munzlinger. "This clever attack on our Second Amendment rights is dangerous and could be a violation of our civil rights as well. Any attempt to use technology to randomly identify people whom you may disagree with politically is perilous and extreme. Technology like this could very easily be used by users to profile Americans by race, political views and numerous other categories."
