Today, the Maine House of Representatives passed important Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) confidentiality legislation, Legislative Document 345, by a 106-40 vote. This measure will now be sent to the state Senate for consideration.
Earlier this year, after a Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) request from the Bangor Daily News to obtain the personal information—including the names, addresses and birthdates—of all CHP holders in Maine, the General Assembly acted swiftly to enact temporary CHP confidentiality legislation into law. However, this measure is only in effect through April 30. That is why it is critical the Maine General Assembly passes permanent privacy protection for CHP holders.
Recently in New York, information on those who possess pistol permits was published and their home addresses were a placed on an interactive map. Unfortunately, reports indicate that multiple burglaries and theft of firearms occurred after that information became public. If LD 345 is enacted into law, it would ensure this invasion of privacy would never happen in the Pine Tree State.
