Anti-Gun Democrats Again Working to Further Erode Second Amendment Rights in Sacramento

Thursday, January 31, 2013

In an attempt to exploit the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy to further destroy the Second Amendment in the Golden State, anti-gun Democrats in the state Assembly have introduced several anti-gun bills that they will be working to bully through the California Legislature this year.  These egregious bills will have no effect on crime.  According to the Brady Campaign’s national ranking of state gun control laws, California is already THE “best” (most restrictive) state in the nation and has already banned pseudo "assault weapons."

By definition, violent and insane criminals violate laws, especially gun control laws.  They neither obey gun bans, nor register their firearms and absolutely do not comply with any gun control schemes whatsoever.  As a result, innocent law-abiding citizens are the only ones who pay the price and are left defenseless and made victims or criminals.

Not only are anti-gun legislators NOT concerned about law-abiding citizens, they are not even concerned whether or not they are actually violating the law with their egregious legislation.  At Tuesday's hearing, former state Senate Pro Tem Don Perata gave advice to the committee members on how to deal with gun legislation by telling them, "Don't worry about legalities - that's why we have courts."

Please call AND e-mail your state Assemblyman TODAY and urge him or her to OPPOSE the following bills that were announced by the anti-gun Democratic Assembly:

AB 48, introduced by “F” rated Assemblyman Nancy Skinner, would require reporting of ammunition sales, licensing of ammunition dealers and other controls of ammunition, similar to firearms. This bill would also expand the definition of large capacity magazine to include any readily restorable or disassembled magazine that appears to hold more than ten rounds, and would require notification to local law enforcement if an individual buys anything more than a small amount of ammunition in a five-day period.

AB 169, introduced by “F” rated state Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, would prohibit members of the general public from transferring any handgun that is not on, or drops off of, the state’s roster of approved handgun, to anyone other than a family member or spouse.

AB 174, introduced by anti-gun Assemblyman Rob Bonita, would remove the grandfather clause on existing firearms that are currently illegal to purchase, but are legal to possess if they were owned prior to making the firearm illegal.

AB 187, also introduced by Assemblyman Bonita, would impose an additional tax on the sale of ammunition.

These anti-gun bills are expected to be introduced soon:

  • “F” rated Assemblyman Luis Alejo is expected to introduce a bill that would prohibit a person who illegally sells or buys firearms or ammunition for ten years.
  • “D-” rated Assemblyman Tom Ammiano is expected to introduce a bill mandating firearm storage.
  • “F” rated Assemblyman Roger Dickinson is expected to introduce two more bills placing an additional .05 cent tax on the purchase of ammunition and require companies who manufacture, sell, distribute or market firearms or ammunition to divest investment funds from the State and would prohibit those companies from future investments.

The following anti-gun bills listed below have already been introduced:

SB 53, introduced by "F" rated state Senator Kevin de León, would require ammunition purchasers to obtain a permit and pay an annual fee (tax).  This bill will also ban online and mail order sales of all ammunition, and require registration and thumbprinting for all ammunition purchases.

SB 47, introduced by "F" rated state Senator Leland Yee, would expand the prohibitions on the sale and possession of “assault weapons” to include hundred of firearms currently lawful for sale in California.

SB 108, also introduced by state Senator Yee, would require a firearm to be placed in a locked container or otherwise be disassembled each time the owner leaves his or her property.

AJR 5, introduced by "F" rated state Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, would urge the President and Congress to support and pass Senator Feinstein’s proposed legislation prohibiting the sale, transfer, importation, and manufacturing of assault weapons, and large-capacity magazines.

HR 1, introduced by "F" rated state Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, would be a standing rule of the Assembly, which would state, a person, except a peace officer acting within the scope of his or her employment, may not carry or possess a firearm on the floor of the Assembly during any session of the Assembly or in a committee hearing room during any meeting of a committee or subcommittee.

The NRA will continue to monitor these onerous bills against law-abiding citizens.  In the meantime, call AND e-mail your Assemblyman urging him or her to protect law-abiding citizens instead of penalizing them for the criminal activity of others.  Contact information for your Assemblyman can be found here.
