Maine: Legislation Introduced that Jeopardizes Carrying in National Parks

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard!

A recently adopted federal law, which would allow the carrying of firearms in all National Parks, goes into effect on Monday, February 22.  As we reported, legislation has been introduced in Augusta that would eliminate this federal law within Acadia National Park, along Maine’s portion of the Appalachian Trail, and other federal land.  Last week a public hearing was held in which proponents continued to advocate turning our National Parks into victim zones by eliminating self-defense by permitted individuals.

On Friday, February 12 the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety will be having a work session on
LD1737 (sponsored by State Senator Dennis Damon (D-28)).  It will be held at 2 p.m. in room 436 of the State House.

In response to the concerns of Maine’s law-abiding gun owners, State Representative Stephen Hanley (D-59) will be offering an amendment at the work session that would exempt concealed carry permit holders.

Please attend Friday’s work session and show your support for the Second Amendment.  Also, please contact the members of the Joint Standing Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety TODAY and politely urge them to oppose LD1737 as written or to vote for the Hanley amendment to the bill.  Contact
information for the committee can be found below.
