Just before 1:00 a.m. two armed men stormed into the Players Paradise game room in Galveston County, Texas. The robbers ordered the customers to the ground and began working their way through the room, stealing from everyone. Among the customers was 77 - year-old Korean War veteran Robert Hays. After one of the criminals went through his wallet, Hays reached for his snub-nose .38 revolver. Hays fired and struck one of the criminals , who immediately dropped his gun and fled with his accomplice. Hays said that even his 39 year-old wife helped out, stating, “When that first man dropped his pistol and went down, she got up and grabbed (it) and was ready to back me up.” The police were able to track down the wounded criminal at a local medical center where he sought treatment. The wounded robber has a previous conviction for aggravated robbery. Texas City police Capt. Brian Goetschius stated that Hays will not be charged in the case and went on to say, “He is truly a victim whose back was against the wall.”
