This week, Governor John Baldacci (D) signed into law Legislative Document 648, Maine’s “No-Net-Loss” legislation. LD 648, sponsored by State Representative Troy Jackson (D-1), will require that if a parcel of state land open to public hunting is closed to hunting, the same number of acres of state land must be opened to hunting elsewhere. This new law guarantees that future generations will have the same public hunting opportunities that are enjoyed today by specifying that there will never be less land open to hunting than what is available on January 1, 2008.
