The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to close certain areas in Nye County to recreational shooting. The BLM's stated reason for the closure is the rapid increase in population and growth of Pahrump, which the agency says has created conflicts between new residential owners and target shooters.
Federal agencies like the BLM have been systematically closing vast acreages of your public land to the shooting sports. Even though target shooting is recognized as a traditional use of public lands in the West, it is falling victim to the interests of other recreationists and to anti-gunners who move onto private property adjacent to the public land.
The public comment period has been extended to Tuesday, May 13. It is imperative that BLM hears from you and everyone you know who believes in the protection of the shooting sports on public lands. Even though BLM is exempting hunting from the shooting closure for the time being, it is safe to say that those who complain about target shooting will soon go after hunting.
