Montgomery County, Md., police have formed a task force to sift through the more than 70,000 tips received during the sniper investigation, hoping the information will lead them to people who are possessing guns illegally. Jim Purtilo, editor of a Maryland newsletter on gun rights, called the initiative a "witch hunt." He said he believes that many law-abiding people were reported as suspects by their neighbors simply because they owned firearms.
