Over the last six years, the judicial confirmation process has become an exercise in bipartisan cynicism. The Senate Judiciary Committee under Republican and Democratic control alike has often refused to hold hearings or take votes on federal court nominees of an opposing-party president. While this may please special-interest groups, it does great harm to deliberative democracy and the judiciary.
