Townsend Calls Probe "Political Garbage"

Lt. Gov. Kathleen Townsend angrily denounced a federal investigation of her crime control office as "political garbage" yesterday. The federal investigation is not the first critical look at the Governor`s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. A state audit faulted the agency for repeatedly violating procedures for administering federal grants. Townsend`s uncharacteristically fierce outburst came at the end of a long and difficult day that began with revelations of trouble in two areas of the state`s criminal justice system, her primary responsibility during seven years as lieutenant governor.
