Annette Ransom was walking to her sister's home in Chattanooga, Tenn., when overtaken from behind by a man who began forcing her into the bushes at the rear of the building. During the struggle, she managed to extract a .22 pistol from her purse and fired two rounds that mortally wounded her assailant. Police later identified the man as having three previous rape convictions among other charges.
