Dairy store operator Loren Ditsch of South Bend, Ind., was faced at his checkout counter by a holdup man wielding a handgun and demanding cash. Ditsch stalled, and in the process, the criminal was distracted by store customers. Seizing a pistol, Ditsch fired two rounds that mortally wounded the would-be robber.
