Awakened at 4 a.m. by the sounds of a prowler in her San Pablo, Calif., home, Ressie Page tried to phone the police, only to hear a voice in the dark say, "Page, put down that phone." She put down the phone but picked up her .22 pistol. Two shots sent the intruder fleeing out the front door into the arms of police officers who had been called by a neighbor.
