Mrs. Bertha Simmons was awakened in the middle of the night
by screams for help outside her Columbus, Ohio, home. She heard a
man pleading, "Don't hit me again. I gave you all I got." Mrs.
Simmons, 81, got out of bed, grabbed a pistol from her dresser
drawer, and ran out onto her front porch. She observed three men
with lead pipes beating a cab driver over the head. Mrs. Simmons
started firing and the thugs fled. When police arrived at the scene
they credited Mrs. Simmons' action with saving the cab driver's
life. Later she received a citation for bravery.
