Alaska Passes Broad Right To Carry Law

Friday, June 13, 2003

FAIRFAX, VA - Governor Frank Murkowski of Alaska signed into law HB 102, a "Right-to-Carry" bill, which enables law-abiding citizens the Right-to-Carry a firearm without government intrusion. Vermont is the only other state in the Union to allow all eligible law-abiding gun owners the Right-to-Carry without a permit. According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, Vermont consistently falls near the bottom of the list in terms of crime.

"This was a great victory for the right of self-protection," said Chris W. Cox, chief lobbyist of the NRA. "I would like to thank Governor Murkowski for signing this common-sense measure into law and for his continued strong support of our Second Amendment freedoms. Guns are used more than 2.5 million times each year for protection, and we know that Vermont has one of the lowest violent crime rates because of it."

NRA would like to thank the co-sponsors of this bipartisan legislation, Representative Eric Croft (D-District 25) and Representative Bill Stoltze (R-District 16) for their tireless effort on behalf of gun-owners throughout Alaska. NRA would also like to recognize the support of Senate President Gene Therriault, House Speaker Pete Kott (R-District 17) and Governor Frank Murkowski (R). And, as always, the grassroots efforts and political activism by tens of thousands of NRA members across the state played a pivotal role in this process.

The 132 year-old NRA is the nation`s oldest civil rights group, and advocates enforcement of existing laws to prosecute and punish violent criminals. The NRA is the nation`s leader in teaching gun safety and promoting marksmanship among law enforcement officers nationwide. The Association has over 4 million members across America.
