NRA Statement on Congressional Passage of Reckless Lawsuit Preemption Legislation

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and NRA Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director Chris Cox
Washington, D.C. -- The National Rifle Association (NRA) heralded passage of H.R. 1036 in the United States House of Representatives with a resounding margin of 285-140, including 63 democrats. This legislation seeks to end malicious and predatory lawsuits aimed at bankrupting the firearms industry. Chris W. Cox, the NRA`s chief lobbyist said, "I am happy with the strong bi-partisan support of this vote. This common sense measure has the support of the White House and the support of the majority of members in both chambers. The United States House of Representatives sent a clear message to gun ban groups that they cannot circumvent the legislative process in their efforts to advance their political agenda. A similar message was also sent to the gluttonous trial attorneys who seek to bankrupt a law-abiding and legitimate industry for personal profit." NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre added, "Congress acted today to protect one of America`s oldest and most honorable industries. Their action is a big step forward toward ending these careless lawsuits. These suits are a deliberate attempt aimed at manipulating our legal system to advance a failing political agenda." In closing, Cox said, "I would like to thank all those who voted for common sense today. I would be remiss if I did not distinguish the hard work and efforts of Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Rick Boucher (D-VA), Melissa Hart (R-PA) and Chris John (D-LA), the original sponsors of the bill and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), the Chairman of the House Judiciary committee. They are heroes in the effort to preserve our freedom."
