It is probably safe to say that a majority of Hollywood's stars and A-list actors fall on the anti-gun side of the aisle when it comes to their view of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Historically, not all are anti-gun--Charlton Heston, Tom Selleck, and Chuck Norris, for instance--but a majority are. And for those stars who are pro-gun, openly admitting to that fact these days would bring almost certain disdain and attack from their peers (think Rosie O'Donnell).
It comes as somewhat of a surprise, then, that mega-star Brad Pitt recently had so much to say about the issue of gun ownership, both as an individual right, and as a part of our national identity.
"America is a country founded on guns. It's in our DNA. It's very strange but I feel better having a gun. I really do. I don't feel safe, I don't feel the house is completely safe, if I don't have one hidden somewhere. That's my thinking, right or wrong," Pitt said in a Daily Mail interview that covered a variety of other topics.
"I got my first BB gun when I was in nursery school. I got my first shotgun by first grade, I had shot a handgun by third grade and I grew up in a pretty sane environment," Pitt continued.
Following the tragic Aurora, Colorado murders, some exploitive politicians predictably tried to seize on the opportunity to propose more gun laws. Commenting on the idea, Pitt indicated that he doesn't believe gun laws should be changed. "I was in the UK when the shootings happened and I did hear the discussion about gun control start again, and as far as I know it petered out as it always does."
"It's just something with us. To turn around and ask us to give up our guns... I don't know, we're too afraid that we're going to give up ours and the bad guys are still going to get theirs. It's just in our thinking. I'm telling you, we don't know America without guns."
These revelations come on the heels of recent rumors that Pitt bought wife-to-be Angelina Jolie a nearly $400,000 shooting range and armory as a wedding present.
It's good to know that a Hollywood legend enjoys guns and shooting, and believes in the right of self-defense.
