Missouri: Senate Committee Scheduled to Vote on Self-Defense Bill on Monday

Friday, May 2, 2014

Having been debated in a public hearing earlier this week, House Bill 1539, legislation to strengthen Missouri’s current Castle Doctrine law, is scheduled to be voted on next Monday, May 5, by the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee.

Sponsored by state Representative Mike Kelley (R-127) and being handled by state Senator Bob Dixon (R-30) in the Senate, HB 1539 would improve Missouri’s current Castle Doctrine statute by allowing an individual who is occupying private property under the authority of the property owner to use deadly force in defense of one’s self or another.  HB 1539 also includes language that would modify the current concealed carry training requirement, which requires an individual to shoot both a revolver and semi-automatic pistol, and would allow someone to shoot only one firearm rather than both firearms.

Please contact members of the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee and respectfully urge them to support HB 1539.  Contact information for committee members can be found below:
