Kentucky: Two NRA-Supported Bills See Further Action

Thursday, March 20, 2014

Yesterday, important pro-Second Amendment legislation passed unanimously in the Kentucky Senate.  Senate Bill 232 will now be sent to the state House for committee assignment and consideration.  SB 232, sponsored by state Senator Brandon Smith (R-30), would require that when a chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) signoff is required for the transfer of a firearm or other item regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA), certification must be provided within fifteen days as long as the applicant is not prohibited by law from receiving the firearm or other item.

Under current law, CLEOs are not required to act on an application for an NFA item, so a law-abiding applicant has no recourse when an application is denied by a CLEO for any reason, including their own personal feelings toward NFA items.  By removing any possibility of personal bias and creating a statewide standard, SB 232 protects the rights of law-abiding gun owners across the Bluegrass State.

SB 232 is important Second Amendment legislation which protects law-abiding gun owners from a chief law enforcement officer’s personal bias.  Please contact your state Representative today and ask him or her to vote for SB 232.  Contact information for your state Representative can be found here.

Also yesterday, House Bill 283 passed in the House Licensing and Occupations Committee.  HB 283, sponsored by state Representative James Kay (D-56), would clarify certain aspects of Kentucky’s charitable gaming statutes and afford organizations like the Friends of NRA the opportunity to host more events throughout the state.  HB 283 would also streamline the reporting process for those on the charitable gaming license.

HB 283 now goes to the House floor for consideration.  Please also contact your state Representative in support of HB 283.
