Last Friday, the Idaho House State Affairs Committee passed Senate Bill 1254 by a party-line 11 to 3 vote. This NRA-backed self-defense bill, sponsored by state Senator Curt McKenzie (R-13), would permit qualified retired law enforcement officers and law-abiding adults who have obtained an Idaho “enhanced” concealed carry license to possess a firearm on public college or university campuses. SB 1254 now goes to the House floor for a vote this week.
As previously reported, SB 1254 is an essential step toward protecting students and faculty on campus. However, this legislation still provides universities discretion to prohibit qualifying individuals from carrying within a student dormitory or residence hall and a public entertainment or sporting facility with a seating capacity of more than 1,000 persons. The specific provisions of SB 1254 ensure that responsible, law-abiding individuals with enhanced training are able to carry a firearm for self-defense while on a public college or university campus.
Please contact your two state Representatives TODAY and urge them to support this important self-defense bill. Urge your state Representatives to vote for SB 1254, and remind them that an individual’s right to self-defense shouldn’t be eliminated simply because they are on a college or university campus!
