Idaho: Senate Passes Secure Campuses Bill

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Today, Senate Bill 1254 passed in the Idaho Senate by a 25 to 10 vote and will now go to the state House of Representatives where it will be referred to the House State Affairs Committee.  SB 1254, introduced by state Senator Curt McKenzie (R-13), would permit qualified retired law enforcement officers and law-abiding adults who have obtained an Idaho “enhanced” concealed carry license to possess a firearm on public college or university campuses.  However, this legislation would provide universities discretion to prohibit qualifying individuals from carrying within a student dormitory or residence hall and a public entertainment or sporting facility with a seating capacity of more than 1,000 persons.  The specific provisions of SB 1254 ensure that responsible, law-abiding individuals with enhanced training are able to carry a firearm for self-defense while on a public college or university campus.

SB 1254 is an important step toward protecting students and faculty on campus, and the NRA thanks the state Senators who voted for this bill.  Using the contact information provided below, please call and e-mail members of the House State Affairs Committee and urge them to support SB 1254.
