South Carolina: City of Tega Cay Choosing to Disregard NRA Language on Discharge Ordinance

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

As we have previously reported, the City of Tega Cay is in the process of amending its current ordinance that imposes unnecessary restrictions on the discharge of firearms within the city limits.  The NRA had communicated its concerns to the Tega Cay City Council, and offered carefully crafted language that ensured law-abiding gun owners would not be confused as to what is legal when discharging a firearm.  Our language also addressed what appeared to be the concerns of the City Council regarding safety issues.  Unfortunately, the City Council has chosen to ignore our language and has not contacted the NRA to discuss the concerns that were raised in our initial communication.  Using the contact information provided below, please call and e-mail City Councilmembers and express your disappointment that they have chosen to ignore NRA’s concerns, and have decided to consider language that falls far short of being clear and unambiguous.  Please urge them to reject the proposed amended language in Ordinance 70 as it relates to the discharge of firearms, BB guns, bows and crossbows, and to work with the NRA on clear, effective language that strikes a balance between safety concerns and the rights of gun owners.

The next regular monthly City Council meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday, October 20 when this issue is likely to be discussed.  The City Council may even vote on the proposed amendment to its discharge ordinance.  Please attend this meeting and urge the City Council to reject the current proposed discharge ordinance amendments and to work with the NRA on language that would better ensure a balance is struck that both addresses safety concerns and respects our Right to Keep and Bear Arms, especially for personal protection.  The next City Council meeting will be held on Monday, October 20 from 6:30 P.M. - 8:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 15077 Molokai Drive in Tega Cay.
