Iowa: Proposed Firearms Ban Defeated

Thanks to your help, a proposed ordinance to ban carrying of weapons on city property was defeated in Tama on Monday, November 3.  The city council voted 3-0 to remove this proposal from its agenda, preventing a second reading and vote.  As reported earlier this week, this proposed ordinance would have banned individuals from carrying a firearm on city property and in municipal buildings, in spite of Iowa’s firearms preemption law which reads:

724.28  PROHIBITION OF REGULATION BY POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS.

A political subdivision of the state shall not enact an ordinance 
  regulating the ownership, possession, legal transfer, lawful
  transportation, registration, or licensing of firearms when the
  ownership, possession, transfer, or transportation is otherwise
  lawful under the laws of this state.  An ordinance regulating
  firearms in violation of this section existing on or after April 5,
  1990, is void. 

The misguided ordinance would have prevented law-abiding concealed carry license holders from exercising their Second Amendment rights on any municipal property in Tama.  The NRA thanks members of the Tama City Council and the Mayor for listening to gun owners and the NRA by dropping this proposal in order to protect your right to self-defense.
