Resolution 13-74 CD1, introduced by council members Ron Menor and Kymberly Pine, was adopted unanimously by the Honolulu City Council on June 5. Gun ownership on Oahu has been on the rise as it has been across the nation. With this increase, the Honolulu Police Department has continually been overburdened causing delays for those seeking to exercise this constitutional right and comply with Hawaii law. Although Hawaii has restrictive and ineffective gun control laws in place, this resolution takes a step in the right direction and directs the administration to form a working group, which would include stakeholders, to address this issue and deliver a report to the City Council by October 1 of this year. Resolution 13-74 will aid the Honolulu Police Department as well as law-abiding gun owners by paving the way for the HPD to open new locations for permitting and registration at the Kapolei and Kaneohe Police Stations.
