Utah: Encourage Senate and House to Stand Strong in Support of Right to Carry and Reconvene for Veto Override Session

Friday, April 12, 2013

On March 22, Governor Gary Herbert (R) vetoed House Bill 76, sponsored by state Representative John Mathis (R-55).   Your immediate help is needed to save this important right to carry reform bill that received overwhelming approval in the state House by a 51 to 18 vote on March 1 and in the state Senate by a 22 to 7 vote on March 13.  Legislative leadership has set April 19 as the deadline for your state lawmakers to decide whether or not they will vote to override the Governor’s veto of HB 76.  A veto override session can only take place with consent from two-thirds of the members in both state legislative chambers:  50 votes in the House and 20 in the Senate.  These numbers are almost identical to the votes in favor of HB 76 when it passed the legislature last month.

It is critical that every state Senator and Representative who voted for HB 76 stand strong in their support of a veto session to save and enact it.  Every call AND e-mail to your state lawmakers will make the difference!

Currently, Utah law allows law-abiding gun owners to openly carry an unloaded firearm.  HB 76 would legalize the concealment of the same unloaded firearm by law-abiding persons 21 years of age or older without a permit.  For more information on this legislation and the improvements it will make to Utah law, please click here.

Please call AND e-mail your state Senator and Representative IMMEDIATELY.  Remember: consent of two-thirds of the members is needed in both chambers.  Please help ensure your state legislators’ support in reconvening for a veto override session, and that they will vote to override the Governor's veto of HB 76.
