Colorado: Mental Health Bill Full of Problems Passes House Committee

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Contact your state Representative TODAY in opposition to House Bill 1306

Today, the Colorado House Health, Insurance and Environment Committee considered and passed House Bill 1306 by a 6-5 party line vote.  HB 1306, introduced by state Representative Beth McCann (D-8), will create a task force to review mental health issues as it relates to the possession of firearms.

As NRA first reported, Representative McCann introduced an earlier version of HB 1306 which included the most rights-infringing, anti-gun language seen this session.  After overwhelming opposition to her bill was voiced by the tens of thousands of NRA members and supporters across Colorado, she pulled this version from advancing any further.

Representative McCann now wants to form a task force to review similar proposals under the newly introduced HB 1306.  As drafted, this task force would have thirty appointed members, with only a couple of these members explicitly defending your Second Amendment rights.  HB 1306 is stacking the deck against responsible gun owners and sportsmen.

The most draconian anti-gun legislation in Colorado’s history was passed this legislative session, which was spearheaded by Representative McCann and other anti-gun legislators in both chambers.  Because of Representative McCann’s clear disdain for gun owners and sportsmen in Colorado, coupled with the original language in her deeply flawed mental health bill which denied due process, your NRA sees the creation of this task force as the next building block to steal away your gun rights.

Additionally, some state and national mental health groups and associations find fault with HB 1306 and its recommendations, as these potential recommendations could discourage those individuals who need the help the most from seeking much-needed treatment.

While the NRA supports legitimate and reasonable discussion on firearms safety and fixing our broken mental health system, this bill stacks the deck for a one-sided conversation and recommendation.

Please contact your state Representative and respectfully ask that he or she VOTE NO on HB 1306.  Hold your state Representative accountable and ask how he or she plans on voting on HB 1306.  We cannot allow anti-gun legislators in Denver to steal away any more of your Second Amendment rights this legislative session or in the future.
