Minnesota Gun Control Bills Gaining Momentum- Your State Legislators Need to Hear from You TODAY!

Friday, March 15, 2013

Some of the most comprehensive violations of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms in recent memory passed last night  in the Senate Judiciary Committee by 5 to 3 votes. Senate File 458 and Senate File 235 were amended by anti-gun Senator Ron Latz (DFL- 46) into extreme gun control omnibus bills which would criminalize private transfers of firearms with limited exceptions, make the transferee permit discretionary, create a possible thirty-day waiting period to verify an individual’s identity during the application process for a transferee permit, among other things. Senate File 235 has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee where it has yet to be scheduled for a hearing.  Senate File 458 has been sent to the Senate floor and could come up for a vote at any time!

The NRA-backed alternative bill that would provide real solutions to Minnesota’s crime problems and actually make a difference was not considered during last night’s hearing.  Senate File 1359, introduced by pro-gun Senator Julianne Ortman (R-47), is the Senate companion to bi-partisan House File 1325, introduced by Representative Debra Hilstrom (DFL-40B).  Both of these bills would crack down on violent criminals while also addressing much-needed mental healthcare reforms.  For more information on this legislation, please click here.

In the state House, anti-gun Representative Michael Paymar’s (DFL-64B) recently amended gun-control package, House File 237, has been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday March 19 at 10:00 am.  As previously reported, the Paymar gun control laundry-list would be an unprecedented infringement on our constitutional right to bear arms.  Please attend this hearing on Tuesday in Room 10 of the State Office Building at the Capitol to show your opposition to this extremist gun control measure.

Contact your state Senator and demand that he or she OPPOSE Senate Files 458 and 235 and SUPPORT SF1359.  Also, please contact members of the House Public Safety Committee listed below before Tuesday’s hearing and urge them to OPPOSE HF 237.  Please also ask them to SUPPORT NRA’s alternative bill, HF 1325, that offers real and practical solutions.
