Colorado: Two Anti-Gun Bills Defeated on Second Reading but the Fight is Not Over

Saturday, March 9, 2013

Please call and email your state Senator NOW to voice your opposition to House Bills 1224, 1228 and 1229!

During a marathon day of legislation on Friday, three anti-gun bills passed their second reading in the Colorado Senate and are now eligible for a final vote this Monday at 10:00 a.m.  It is critical your state Senator hears from you to urge him or her to oppose the following measures:

  • House Bill 1224 – Bans magazines with a capacity greater than fifteen rounds.
  • House Bill 1228 – Imposes a “gun tax” for a background check when purchasing a firearm.
  • House Bill 1229 – Criminalizes the private transfer of a firearm.

Monday is your last chance to voice your opposition to these draconian measures!   If they pass in the Senate on Monday, these anti-gun bills will be sent to Governor Hickenlooper for his expected signature.  That is why you need to call your Senator at 303-866-2316 and tell him or her to stand up for the Second Amendment freedoms Coloradans hold dear by voting NO on all three of these measures.

Because of an outpouring of activism from Second Amendment supporters, two extreme measures were effectively killed yesterday for the session:

  • House Bill 1226 – Repeals current law allowing individuals with a concealed carry permit to carry a firearm for self-defense on a college or university campus.
  • Senate Bill 196 – Holds all manufacturers, distributors and owners of common rifles and shotguns they produce, sell or use, liable if that gun is misused to harm another person.  The definition of an "assault weapon" subject to liability in SB 196 includes a single shot or double-barreled shotgun and any break-open rifle as well as every semi-automatic rifle and shotgun.  This is a backdoor to banning legal firearms and is in direct violation of the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

We need you to continue to put pressure on your state Senator and respectfully urge him or her to vote NO on House Bills 1224, 1228 and 1229 on Monday.

Make sure your state Senator hears from you at 303-866-2316.  Click here  for help identifying your elected official and their contact information.
