Nebraska: NRA-Backed Bills Referred to the Judiciary Committee

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

The following bills of importance to Nebraska gun owners, sportsmen and supporters of the Second Amendment have recently been referred to the Judiciary Committee for its consideration:

Legislative Bill 390 (LB 390), introduced by state Senator Mark Christensen (44), is important legislation related to Emergency Powers. LB 390 would prohibit the state or any government agency, during a declared state of emergency, from prohibiting or restricting the otherwise lawful possession, use, carrying, transfer, transportation, storage or display of a firearm or ammunition; seizure or confiscation of a lawfully possessed firearm; or requiring registration of a firearm or ammunition for which registration is not otherwise required by law.

This legislation would protect law-abiding citizens in Nebraska from a violation of their constitutional rights reminiscent of what occurred in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, where law-abiding citizens were stripped of their lawfully owned firearms by overzealous government officials leaving them defenseless and unable to protect their families and property.

Legislative Bill 392, introduced by state Senator Steve Lathrop (12), repeals an outdated state firearms statute, bringing state law into alignment with federal law by allowing Nebraska residents to purchase long guns in non-contiguous states.

Legislative Bill 293, introduced by state Senator Bill Kintner (2), protects the confidentiality of all gun records, including concealed handgun permit (CHP) holders in Nebraska. Recently, there have been several instances of anti-gun media outlets publishing the names and addresses of CHP holders jeopardizing the safety and violating the privacy of law-abiding citizens. Such publications place lawful CHP holders at risk to criminals who may target their home to steal firearms. This legislation is essential for the protection of law-abiding gun owners in Nebraska.

Your NRA-ILA will be monitoring and reporting on this and other bills of importance throughout this legislative session. Please continue to check your e-mail and www.NRAILA.org for important updates as well as information on additional legislation.
