Minnesota: Plan to Attend Next Week's Gun Control Hearings!

Thursday, February 14, 2013

Please Contact Senate Judiciary Committee Members TODAY

On Thursday, February 21 at noon in room 15 of the state Capitol, the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings on dangerous anti-gun measures that would infringe on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.  This Committee may also meet from 6-9 pm on Thursday, February 21 and from 12-6 on Friday, February 22.  The Senate Judiciary Committee will likely be considering, among other bills, Senate File 205, or its companion Senate File 458, an omnibus anti-gun bill. Your voice is desperately needed in Saint Paul to prevent tried and failed policies that will do nothing more than disarm honest law-abiding gun owners and infringe on constitutional rights.

Both bills introduced by anti-gun state Senator Bobby Champion (DFL-59), would create new categories of “prohibited persons” for gun ownership and eliminate your right to keep and bear arms without due process.  It would also criminalize private transfers of firearms with limited exceptions, add new fees (taxes) for transfers and transferee permits, limit the ability of the carry permit to function as a transferee permit and create a possible thirty-day waiting period to verify an individual’s identity during the application process for a transferee permit.

Under the private transfer ban provisions of these bills, you will be forced to undergo a criminal investigation if you wish to purchase a firearm from certain family members, friends and co-workers.  This system can only be enforced with gun registration.  And, as we know from experiences in California, Australia and Canada, gun registration enables gun confiscation—only from honest citizens—since criminals are not subject to registration or submit to criminal investigations.

This committee could also hear testimony on the need for so-called “Assault Weapon” and “High Capacity Magazine” bans and other rights-infringing bills.

Lawmakers should not consider and pass failed anti-gun policies that would do nothing to address existing crime.  They should focus on issues that would empower the law-abiding public to protect themselves and loved ones from violent and insane criminals.
