Today, state Representatives Mary Lou Marzian (D-34) and Jim Wayne (D-35) introduced legislation designed to strip away your individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms. While this measure is being touted as a public safety and crime control initiative, the proposals only criminalize and disarm law-abiding gun owners and threaten their inherent right to self-defense.
If this legislation is passed and enacted into law, the following changes will occur to firearm laws in Kentucky:
- You will be mandated to register with the state police your lawfully possessed handguns and certain semi-automatic rifles, and could be subject to unknown fees (taxes) to cover the cost of implementing a gun registration scheme.
- You will be forced to register any magazine that holds more than seven rounds.
- You will be subject to a background investigation and a fee (gun tax) for the private transfer of firearms between family and friends.
- You will be victimized by an unconstitutional mandatory storage requirement for all firearms in your home.
The time is NOW to contact your elected officials and express your opposition to these restrictive measures. Please respectfully tell your state lawmakers that you value your firearm freedoms in the Bluegrass State and urge them to reject these arbitrary measures that will only place undue burden on law-abiding Kentuckians and do nothing to control the misuse of firearms by criminals.
