Anti-gun lawmakers on the Insurance and Real Estate Committee voted to draft a bill on February 14 to mandate liability insurance for firearms owners. While no specific language has been offered yet, a public hearing could come as early this week.
There are numerous problems with mandated liability insurance for firearms owners including:
- It is an affront to law-abiding gun owners—you are not required to carry insurance to exercise any other constitutional right.
- It is economically discriminatory—insurance is expensive and such a mandate could make firearm ownership unattainable for thousands of law-abiding Connecticut residents.
Currently, no other state has a firearm liability insurance law. Misguided legislators behind this effort would subject their constituents and tens of thousands of law-abiding Connecticut citizens to a discriminatory and burdensome law that especially penalizes those who might not be able to afford such insurance.
