Delaware: Governor Jack Markell Unveils Gun Control Plan to Leave You Defenseless

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Call your state lawmakers TODAY

Delaware Governor Jack Markell (D) has unveiled broad gun control plans that should alarm all law-abiding gun owners in the First State.  At this moment, legislation has not been introduced.  However his proposals as outlined in his news release snub the Supreme Court's repeated ruling that the Second Amendment protects a fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and are in direct violation of Delaware’s own state constitution Article I Section 20 where it is written, "A person has the right to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, family, home and State, and for hunting and recreational use."  Governor Markell and anti-gun lawmakers are attacking and trying to demonize you, the law-abiding citizen in Delaware who responsibly exercises your right to own a gun, rather than protecting you and your children from those who act criminally.  Proposals like these have been tried in the past and have been resounding failures across the country.  This type of legislation not only violates your rights, but blithely ignores the fact that criminals simply do not obey gun bans, register their firearms or comply with any gun control schemes.  As a result, only law-abiding citizens will comply and be left defenseless.

Governor Markell is motivated by political gain and making a name for himself – and very much uninterested in sound solutions that would be within the scope of the law rather than make criminals out of the law-abiding. Contact your state legislators today.  Let them know that these proposals that outlaw commonly-owned firearms, create unreasonable barriers to self-defense of the law-abiding against criminals, and go so far as to criminalize Delaware’s family traditions and hunting heritage will not be tolerated.

Governor Markell’s gun control package would at the very least include the following:

  • A ban on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms
  • Arbitrary restrictions on magazine capacity
  • Mandate reporting of lost or stolen guns within 48-hours
  • Require background checks for all private firearm sales even though, with the support of Governor Markell, the state instant check was repealed just two years ago
  • Create a 1,000-foot "gun free" (crime victim) zone around schools – which already exists under federal law

Governor Markell’s proposed legislation over-reaches and misses the mark.  It will do nothing to stop crime, and will only penalize the law-abiding.  While this legislation has yet to be introduced, one thing is for certain:  Anti-gun politicians are attempting to offer up your constitutional rights as a sacrificial lamb because they WILL NOT focus on real solutions for the criminal acts of violence by gangs, drug dealers or the insane.  The NRA-ILA will continue to send updates on this matter as details become available to us.  However, it is of the utmost importance that you act NOW to stop all attempts at an across the board gun ban and other impotent gun control schemes.  Call and e-mail IMMEDIATELY and make your voice be heard on this matter.
