Michigan: Repeal of Permit to Purchase and Registration Passes Senate Committee and Goes to Full Senate

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Yesterday, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation to repeal Michigan’s “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements for handguns.  House Bill 5225, which seeks to replace the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” requirement with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), passed the committee by a 3 to 1 vote after passing in the state House of Representatives by an overwhelming 74 to 36 vote (found on page 14 of the House Journal) on June 13.  Additionally, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the two companion bills to HB 5225,  House Bill 5498, by a 4 to 0 vote, and House Bill 5499 by a 4 to 0 vote with one technical change.  These three pro-gun reforms will now be considered on the full Senate floor within the next several weeks.  At this time, no date has been set.

Thank you to all NRA members who contacted the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Please remember to thank Chairman Rick Jones (R-24) for moving this important legislation through committee and Senators Schuitmaker (R-20) and Tory Rocca (R-10) for voting in favor of HB 5225.

Also, please begin contacting your state Senator and respectfully request they support House Bills 5225, 5498, and 5499 on the Senate floor.  To find your state Senator’s contact information, please click here.
