Tomorrow, August 14, the Corrales Village Council will consider and possibly vote on Resolution No. 12-032, which would impose a far-reaching ban on the lawful carrying of firearms in or near many village facilities - including outdoor parks, recreational centers and the community library.
Not only could this resolution's restrictions regarding the carrying of firearms on one's person violate Article II Section 6 of the New Mexico Constitution (which states that “[n]o law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense” and "[n]o (n)o municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms"), but it would also conflict with a provision of state law that recognizes the right to possess loaded firearms in personal vehicles. Under this proposed resolution, you could be prohibited from having a loaded gun in your car or truck while in the parking lot of any of the village facilities listed!
A copy of the proposed resolution can be found here. Please make plans to attend tomorrow's meeting and take the opportunity to sign up to speak against this measure. This meeting is scheduled to take place at 6:30pm in the Village of Corrales Council/Municipal Court Chambers, located at 4324 Corrales Road, Corrales. Make your voice heard in opposition to these unnecessary and constitutionally suspect limits on your right to self-defense in and around these taxpayer-owned facilities!
