The South Carolina General Assembly is in full swing for this year’s session, and the NRA is working with legislators to promote a number of pro-gun reforms. The legislation below are just some of the bills the NRA currently supports and is monitoring. While there is no action scheduled for them at this time, your NRA-ILA will be sure to alert you when these bills begin to move, as well as update you on other legislation we are tracking.
Early state legislation of note to gun owners includes:
House Bill 3664, introduced by state Representative Garry Smith (R-27), seeks to forbid policies that prohibit law-abiding citizens from storing lawfully owned firearms and/or ammunition in their vehicles.
House Bill 3665, introduced by state Representative Dan Cooper (resigned), would eliminate the redundant requirement that Federal Firearms License (FFL) holders also be licensed by the state in order to transfer handguns. This bill would also remove the prohibition on the sale of certain handguns that have “a die-cast, metal alloy frame or receiver which melts at a temperature of less than eight hundred degrees Fahrenheit.”
House Bill 3882, introduced by state Representative Mike Pitts (R-14), is a Fraudulent Firearms and Ammunition Purchase Prevention bill. This legislation, if enacted, would penalize a person who knowingly solicits, persuades, encourages, or entices a licensed dealer or private seller of firearms or ammunition to transfer a firearm or ammunition under circumstances which the person knows would violate federal or state laws.
House Bill 4494, introduced by state Representative Chip Huggins (R-85), would enable residents of South Carolina to purchase long guns in non-contiguous states, and residents of non-contiguous states to purchase long guns in South Carolina.
