Please Contact Your State Senator to Urge Support of SB 1760
Several years ago, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a good-faith attempt at “Emergency Powers” protection for gun owners during declared states of emergency. Unfortunately, the language left out key points: it did not specifically state that a person’s right to self-defense and the defense of their loved ones during a declared state of emergency included the right to purchase, own, posses, transport and carry firearms and ammunition.
When informed of this oversight, state Senator Anthony Sykes (R-24) introduced complete “Emergency Powers” language to fill the current gap in the state riot control statute.
On Monday, Senator Sykes’ legislation, Senate Bill 1760, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by an overwhelming bipartisan 8 to 1 vote.
SB 1760 now heads to the Senate floor for further consideration. There is not a specific date for a vote at this time, but your NRA will keep you informed of this legislation as it continues to move through the legislative process.
In the meantime, please send a note of thanks to Senator Anthony Sykes, and contact your state Senator to support SB 1760 when it comes up for a vote.
