Idaho NRA License Plates Available for Sale Monday, September 24!

Thursday, September 20, 2007

The National Rifle Association specialty Idaho license plate will go on sale Monday, September 24, at your local county auto-licensing office.  The Idaho Transportation Department will be holding an introduction ceremony on Tuesday, September 25 at the Idaho Correctional Facility in Boise at 1:30 p.m.

The NRA license plate is being made available because of legislation sponsored by former Senator and current Idaho County Commissioner Skip Brandt, State Representative Mike Moyle (R-14), and NRA National Board Member Dwight Van Horn during the 2006 Idaho Legislative Session.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) license plate is unique.

First, it allows freedom-loving Idahoans who support the Second Amendment the ability to fly the NRA logo on our Idaho license plates.

Second, because the NRA recognizes Idaho’s need for road funding, the NRA has generously agreed to allow the special plate fee collected from this plate to go straight into the Idaho Highway Distribution Account, to help build and maintain roads. All other specialty plate fees go directly into the sponsoring organizations’ accounts.

And third, the NRA plate is the first Idaho plate to be produced with the new digital process. This will be a flat, unembossed, more reflective plate.

An initial program fee of $35 will be charged when the plate is first purchased with each subsequent renewal costing $25.   These program fees are in addition to all other applicable annual registration fees, county administrative fees, and plate fees.  All but $10.00 of the special program fees go to the Idaho Highway Distribution Account.  This new license plate may only be displayed on passenger vehicles, light trucks with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds, motorhomes, and camper trailers – (excluding horse, car, and cargo trailers with living facilities).

These special plates may also be personalized with up to five letters and numbers. The cost to personalize these plates is $25 in addition to both the special program fees and all other required annual registration and plate fees.  The renewal fee for a personalized plate is an additional $15 per year.

Individuals can also purchase sample versions of the National Rifle Association license plates from the transportation department for $30.   Twenty dollars of each sample plate sale goes the Idaho Highway Distribution Account.   Sample plates can be personalized at no additional cost; these plates cannot be displayed on motor vehicles, but they do make unique gifts for friends and family.

Standard issue, sequentially numbered, National Rifle Association license plates are only available at your local county assessor’s office after they go on sale.   Personalized and sample plates can also only be purchased, after the plates go on sale, by mail, by fax, or online from the Idaho Transportation Department office in Boise at the following web site -
https://www.accessidaho.org/secure/itd/personalized/plates.html.     All future renewals for these new plates will be processed at your local county auto-licensing offices.
