With the General Assembly scheduled to adjourn sine die this Friday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m., several pro-Second Amendment bills are still awaiting action.
On Monday, May 14, 2007, the Missouri Senate passed Senate Bill 62, sponsored by State Senator Jack Goodman (R-29), by a vote of 29-3. SB62 provides that Missourians no longer have a duty to retreat from a violent criminal attack in their homes or in a vehicle. Additionally, the Senate approved and sent to the House of Representatives several key pro-gun provisions included in SB62 – not the least of which is the repeal of Missouri’s outdated and discriminatory permit to acquire a handgun statute. This bill will also allow law enforcement departments to sell confiscated firearms and permit Federal Flight Deck Officers and certain retired peace officers, provided they have met the necessary requirements, to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
Finally, the Missouri House may consider Senate Bill 225, the “Hunting Heritage Protection Areas Act,” as soon as Tuesday, May 15. SB225, sponsored by State Senator Bill Stouffer (R-21), is a stand-alone bill that will protect critical wildlife habitat and hunting areas from unchecked development, therefore protecting Missouri’s time-honored hunting heritage for future generations. SB225 passed the Senate 32-0, and the House Special Committee on Agriculture Business by a vote of 10-0.
