Kentucky: Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment Moving Through the Senate

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Please call your state Senator and strongly urge him/her to support HB 1!

On February 11, NRA-backed House Bill 1 (HB 1), the Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment, passed in the state House by a 91 to 4 vote.  The bill is now making its way through the state Senate and your help is needed to make sure that this critical legislation does not get delayed or fall victim to partisan politics.

Sponsored by state Representative Leslie Combs (D-94) and House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D-95), HB 1 proposes an amendment to the Kentucky Constitution recognizing the citizens’ right to hunt and fish.  It would provide truly meaningful protections against the anti-hunting extremists who seek to ban all hunting in America.  The ultimate adoption of this constitutional amendment would preserve Kentucky’s rich hunting and fishing traditions for future generations.

HB 1 recognizes hunting, fishing and harvesting of wildlife as constitutional rights. These rights are subject only to laws and rules that have the purpose of “wildlife conservation and management and preserving the future of hunting and fishing.” Specifically, it prohibits regulations that would ban the use of “traditional methods” such as bow hunting or the sustainable taking of wildlife such as deer, elk and doves. HB 1 protects the citizen’s hunting heritage from attacks initiated by well-funded anti-hunting extremists who have assailed sportsmen throughout the country in recent years. In addition, it specifies that hunting, fishing and harvesting of wildlife shall be used as a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife. This ensures that sportsmen will continue to be used as the state’s responsible game managers instead of the taxpayer funded sharpshooters and unproven, expensive wildlife contraception schemes employed in other jurisdictions.

The time is NOW to protect Kentucky’s proud hunting and fishing heritage for generations to come.  Kentucky cannot wait for a crisis to occur or until the anti-hunting forces gain more power.

Please contact your state Senator TODAY and respectfully ask him or her to strongly support HB 1!
