Two Missouri Pro-Gun Bills Heading to Governor!

Thursday, May 17, 2007

On Tuesday, May 15, the House of Representatives approved Senate Bill 62, sponsored by State Senator Jack Goodman (R-29), by a vote of 151-6. This omnibus firearms bill included many critically important advances for Missouri's law-abiding firearm owners, including provisions that: establish the "Castle Doctrine"; repeal the state's permit to acquire a handgun statute; allow for law enforcement agencies to sell firearms confiscated from criminals; allow for Federal Flight Deck Officers to carry a concealed handgun without needing a permit; and exempt qualified current and former law enforcement officers from training requirements necessary to obtain a Right-to-Carry permit.  Special thanks to Senator Goodman, House bill handler State Representative Marilyn Ruestman (R-131), and all our allies in both chambers who worked so hard to make this bill a reality!

Also, on Thursday, May 17, the House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 225, sponsored by State Senator Bill Stouffer (R-21), by a vote of 158-0. SB225, also referred to as the "Hunting Heritage Protection Areas Act," will protect traditional hunting areas within the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers 100-year flood plain from unchecked development. Additionally, SB225 provides that localities may not prohibit the lawful discharge of firearms for hunting or sport shooting in the protected areas, therefore preserving this critical wildlife habitat for current and future generations of hunters and sportsmen.

SB62 and SB225 are now headed to Governor Matt Blunt (R) for his consideration.  Please contact Governor Blunt at (573) 751-1588 and respectfully urge him to sign SB62 and SB225.

Please contact your Senator and Representative and thank them for protecting your Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and for preserving Missouri's proud hunting heritage.
