Missouri Conservation Efforts are Needed!

The U.S. Corps of Engineers is currently considering the construction of a new levy in the St. Peters area of the Mississippi River floodplain.  The construction of such a levy could adversely impact this critical wetland habitat. 

Current estimates suggest that 65% of the migratory waterfowl in the United States pass through this area of the Mississippi River floodplain each year.  Construction and development that alters the natural passage of water in this area would have a major impact on the migration patterns of an uncountable number of birds.  In fact, the health of an entire species could be imperiled by changes in the floodplain.

Since the Mississippi River floodplain is of such significance to wildlife that not only live in Missouri, but that travel across the North American Continent, it is critically important that the proper steps are taken to ensure that this vital habitat is not unnecessarily destroyed.  Please contact both the Missouri Department of Natural Resources - (800) 361-4827 (or via e-mail at: [email protected]), and the Missouri Department of Conservation at (573) 751-4115, and request that an environmental impact study (EIS) be conducted prior to the construction of the new levy.  A comprehensive EIS is the only appropriate procedure to determine the feasibility of constructing a new levy that will not adversely impact the migratory waterfowl flyway.
