Voter Registration and Eligibility

As of January 1, 2006, all municipalities in Wisconsin require voter registration prior to a person being allowed to vote. You may register to vote at your polling location the day of the election.

QUALIFICATIONS

To register to vote in the state of Wisconsin, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Wisconsin for at least 10 days
  • Be 18 years old
  • Not have been convicted of treason, felony or bribery, or if civil rights have been restored
  • Not have been found by a court to be incapable of understanding the objective of the electoral process
  • Not make or benefit from a bet or wager depending on the result of an election
  • Not have voted at any other location, if registering on Election Day

 OBTAINING A VOTER REGISTRATION FORM

  1. BY MAIL:  Complete the Application for Voter Registration and mail it into the municipal clerk's office (contact information). The application must be postmarked no later than the 20th day (3rd Wednesday) before the election.
  2. IN PERSON: Register in the Municipal Clerk's (contact information) office up to 5:00 PM or the close of business whichever is later on the day before the election.
  3. AT THE POLLING PLACE ON ELECTION DAY:  If you wish to register to vote at your polling place, you must bring proof that you have lived at your present location for at least 10 dayspreceding the election. For purposes of voter registration, acceptable forms of proof of residence must include:
    1. A current and complete name, including both the given and family name; and
    2. A current and complete residential address, including a numbered street address, if any, and the name of a municipality.

**Forms with an expiration date must be valid on Election Day.

WISCONSIN ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in Wisconsin?

Any registered voter who cannot go to their polling place on Election Day may choose to vote by absentee ballot. If you are not already registered, you will need to register to vote before an absentee ballot can be sent to you.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Request an absentee ballot in person at your municipal clerk's office. This can be done up until 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election. If you apply for an absentee ballot in your Municipal Clerk's Office, you must vote immediately, seal your ballot in the proper envelope, and return it to a member of the clerk's staff.  No ballots may be taken from the clerk's office.

Download the Application For Absentee Ballot complete the form and mail it to your Municipal Clerk's Office. The application must be received by the clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday before the election in order for an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.

The completed ballot must be received by the Municipal Clerk no later than the day of the election so that it can be delivered to the polling location by 8 p.m.
