Last night, the Knoxville City Council tabled a proposed gun ban designed to deny all Iowans the ability to lawfully carry firearms in any city-owned building. However, the outspoken opposition of NRA and Iowa Firearm Coalition members has earned the citizens of Knoxville and Iowans across the state at least a temporary victory.
This proposed ordinance would have been a direct violation of Iowa’s firearm preemption statute. State law prohibits any county, town, or municipality from instituting firearm laws that do not conform with the statewide standard. Current state law does not forbid possession of a handgun in these areas by a person with a valid permit to carry firearms and as such, Knoxville may not do so either.
Thank you to all our members who voiced their opposition of the proposed gun ban to Mayor Donald Zoutte and members of the Knoxville City Council. Please continue checking your e-mail and www.NRAILA.org for any updates on this ordinance.
