Oklahoma: Right to Keep and Bear Arms Constitutional Amendment Under Fire in Conference Committee

A critical Right to Keep and Bear Arms Constitutional Amendment, House Joint Resolution 1009, is currently sitting in the House Conference Committee on Rules.  Despite having overwhelmingly passed in the Oklahoma House and Senate, HJR 1009 has now surprisingly run into obstacles in the Conference Committee.  Conferees are being pressured by the Chamber of Commerce and out-of-state gun control groups to not sign this measure.  It is imperative that Oklahoma gun owners contact members of the Conference Committee on HJR 1009 and urge them to sign HJR 1009 out of Conference Committee.

Surprisingly, Representatives Weldon Watson and Harold Wright have actively come out against the legislation despite their previous votes of support and even Rep. Wright’s co-authorship.  These actions just go to show that some conferees would rather play political games than uphold their previous support of your fundamental right to self-defense.  Please contact Representative Weldon Watson at 405-557-7330 and Representative Harold Wright at 405-557-7325 and politely urge them to protect their constituents’ Second Amendment rights and not bow to pressure from gun control proponents.

House Joint Resolution 1009 makes a critical improvement to the current Right to Keep and Bear Arms Amendment in Oklahoma’s constitution.  This is a measure that provides the strongest possible protection for your gun rights, guaranteeing in the state constitution your Right to Keep and Bear Arms against any infringements or restrictions for you and future generations of Oklahomans.  All proposed restrictions to any of your fundamental rights should be subject to a standard that ensures the strongest possible protection for that right, especially your Second Amendment rights.  The courts have currently held that there is no such right in the Oklahoma Constitution leaving it to the whims of politicians and unelected bureaucrats!

Thank you to Representative Tommy Hardin for already signing to pass HJR 1009 out of conference committee.

Numerous conferees have still yet to sign this important measure and they need to hear from you!  Please click the “Take Action” button above to contact members of the Conference Committee on HJR 1009 and urge them to sign it out of Conference Committee.
