Georgia: NRA-Backed Legislation Heads to Governor Deal

Georgia: NRA-Backed Legislation Heads to Governor Deal

Yesterday, the Georgia House of Representatives concurred with the Senate version of NRA-supported House Bill 1060.  Now, HB 1060 will move to the desk of Governor Nathan Deal (R) for his consideration.  Governor Deal now has two important NRA-backed pieces of legislation, HB 1060 and HB 859.  As previously reported, House Bill 859, NRA-backed campus carry legislation, passed the Georgia Legislature on March 11 and now moves to the desk of governor Deal for his consideration.

It is important that you contact Governor Nathan Deal (R) TODAY and urge him to sign both HB 859 and HB 1060 into law.

HB 1060 makes several meaningful changes to Georgia gun laws, including:

  • Providing licensees of states with reciprocal agreements with Georgia a 90 day grace period to obtain a GWL while continuing to carry legally using their previous states’ license
  • Prohibiting a probate judge from suspending, extending, delaying, or avoiding the process of the GWL application
  • Protecting any firearms instructor who lawfully instructs, educates, or trains a person in the safe, proper, or technical use of a firearm from civil liability for any injuries caused by the failure of such person to use such firearm properly or lawfully

Sponsored by state Representative Rick Jasperse (R-11), HB 859 seeks to amend restrictions in state law by allowing law-abiding Georgia Weapons License (GWL) holders to carry when they are in or on certain buildings or real property owned by or leased to any public technical school, vocational school, college, university, or other institution of postsecondary education. Georgia Weapons License holders do not present a threat to public safety, as they are one of the most law-abiding segments of the population. These individuals should not be prevented from exercising their right to self-defense simply because they choose to seek a college education.

As Governor of Georgia, Nathan Deal has signed every Pro-Second Amendment piece of legislation to come across his desk and your NRA-ILA hopes Governor Deal will stay true to his past and sign both HB 859 and HB 1060 into law.  Please contact Governor Deal TODAY and urge him to sign both House Bill 859 and House Bill 1060.  You can contact the Governor by clicking here or the Take Action button above.
